Pilotwings SNES Graded Video Game Variant Guide

Two Variants Plus A For Display Only Box Are Recognized By WATA and CGC For This SNES Launch Title

Released in the US in 1991, Pilotwings was a challenging yet rewarding flight simulator for the Super Nintendo. Despite Pilotwings’ popularity among casual and advanced gamers alike, graded copies of Pilotwings are still relatively affordable. There are just two known NTSC variants of Pilotwings recognized by WATA and CGC, as well as a For Display Only box which does not include a cart, manual, or plastic shrink wrap.

First Print - Pilotwings - Recycle Logo Upside-Down

First Print - Pilotwings - Recycle Logo Upside-Down

Also referred to as the “first production” of Pilotwings, this first print contains a simple printing error whereby the red and white recycle logo on the back of the box was printed upside-down. This variant may also be listed as “Made in Japan,” but this information is superfluous as all known copies of this title were manufactured in Japan, regardless of variant.

Second Print - Pilotwings - Recycle Logo Corrected

Second Print - Pilotwings - Recycle Logo Corrected

Possibly referred to as the “second production” of Pilotwings, this printing simply corrects the upside-down recycle logo on the back of the box. This variant may also be listed as “Made in Japan,” but this information is superfluous as all known copies of this title were manufactured in Japan, regardless of variant.

Alternate Print - Pilotwings - For Display Only (FDO) Box

Alternate Print - Pilotwings - For Display Only (FDO) Box

While not a numeric print in the sense of being a first, second, or third print, this alternate print was manufactured alongside the main production runs of this title for the Super Nintendo. This variant is easily recognized by the prominent red and yellow “For Display Only” verbiage on the box front and the fact that these boxes come without a cart, manual, or shrink wrap. While we can’t say for certain, since the recycle logo is printed upside-down on these FDO boxes, it’s likely that they were produced alongside the first print.
