Four Easy to Recognize Variants are Noted by WATA and CGC For This Classic Super Nintendo Title

Released domestically in 1992 as the third installment of the Zelda franchise, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past is widely regarded as one of the greatest video games ever produced. When it comes to collectability and staying power no Zelda game has been rereleased more times across more consoles than A Link to the Past. Rereleases on the Game Boy Advance, Wii, Wii U, New 3DS, Switch, and the Super NES Classic Edition have ensured that tens of millions of gamers have had an opportunity to play this title, which still holds up today.

While sealed first print copies of this title are almost always high-ticket items and seldom seen, relatively affordable Player’s Choice variants and first print CIBs are also available in the marketplace, giving collectors multiple options when trying to collect this legendary Zelda title. With graded sealed and complete in box (CIB) copies of A Link to the Past always in demand, thankfully there are just four known NTSC variants currently recognized by WATA of this classic title.

Often referred to as the “first production” or “early production” of A Link to the Past, this first print is simply all known copies that do not have the Player’s Choice ribbon in the top right-hand corner of the box. This first print also has no ESRB rating on the game box. First prints may be listed as “Made in Japan,” but this information is superfluous as all known copies of this print were manufactured in Japan, regardless of variant.

Second Print - A Link to the Past Player’s Choice, K to A ESRB Rating, Made in Japan

Sometimes referred to as a “later production” variant of A Link to the Past, the second print of this title features the addition of the Player’s Choice - Million Seller ribbon in the upper right corner of the box front. Second prints also include the addition of the Kids to Adults, or K to A, ESRB rating in the bottom right corner of the box front. The second print of this title is made in Japan and this is relevant as the following print of this title is made in Mexico.

Third Print - A Link to the Past Player’s Choice, K to A ESRB Rating, Made in Mexico

Also often referred to as a “later production” variant of A Link to the Past, the third print of this title features the continuation of the Player’s Choice - Million Seller ribbon in the upper right corner of the box front. What differentiates the third print from the second is the country of production. Third print boxes are manufactured in Mexico, rather than Japan, and this change is notated in white lettering on the reverse bottom right of the game box.

Fourth Print - A Link to the Past Player’s Choice, E ESRB Rating, Made in Japan

Fourth Print - A Link to the Past Player’s Choice, E ESRB Rating, Made in Japan

Also considered a “later production” variant of A Link to the Past, the fourth and final print of this title features the continuation of the Player’s Choice - Million Seller ribbon in the upper right corner of the box front. What differentiates the fourth and final print from the second and third is the ESRB changing over their “K to A” rating in the bottom right corner of the box front to an “E for Everyone” rating. The ESRB made this change across the board to all “K to A” games in 1998. Additionally, production was reverted back to Japan and the white “Made in Mexico” lettering has been removed from the back of the game box.
