About Super Mario Bros. 2
Featuring design and playstyle elements that differentiated substantially from the groundbreaking smash hit Super Mario Bros., this sequel ultimately earned critical recognition in its own right and is one of the best selling NES games of all-time. Although accounts from the time period vary, it's believed that the initial sequel planned for Super Mario Bros. was deemed too difficult for US audiences so instead Nintendo created an enhanced port of their 1987 Famicom game Yume Kojo: Doki Doki Panic to release as Super Mario Bros. 2 in the North American market. The only Mario game during this time period where you could choose to play as multiple characters, including Toad and Princess Toadstool, this sequel stands on its own as a classic but unique Mario title.
From a collecting perspective Super Mario Bros. 2 is highly sought after for a multitude of reasons. It's one of the most popular NES titles, it has arguably some of the best Mario Bros. box art of all time, and it's one of the best games for the NES period. Collectors wishing to put together a variant set for Super Mario Bros. 2 can still do so with relative ease, though they face stiff competition from collectors looking to put sets together of both the most popular games for the NES as well as the most popular games of all-time!
